The Federal Judiciary system has developed a way to maintain the commitment of providing access to public records in a centralized location online. The result for US Bankruptcy Court filings public records was the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) website, http://www.pacer.gov/. For a nominal fee of $.08 per court document page viewed PACER caps the cost for a single case document at $2.40 effectively what is the equivalent of 30 pages of record. This cap does not, however, apply to name searches, non case-specific searches of the website information, or Federal Court Proceeding transcripts. For less frequent users, usage under $10.00 per month is waived and therefore free. Anyone can register at PACER and gain permission to view, copy, store, or print the information on bankruptcies filed in the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court. The registration is free although it will require providing a credit card number for charges as they apply to monthly page usage. Within the PACER website you can find case and docket information on over 500 million case documents. The system is set up so that a case is immediately available for viewing once it has been electronically filed.

There is a limit to the past time frame you can access through PACER. Most cases filed before 1999 are still in the paper format only and can be accessed through the court or the Federal Record Centers. U.S. Bankruptcy Court cases that are to be permanently filed are sent to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and can be accessed through them. These records are primarily used in genealogical research. Depending on the specifics of a particular bankruptcy case, some records are destroyed after a set amount of time as established by the Records Schedules. There is the option to hire a professional public records search company to retrieve this information for you but this is the same place they are getting the information. They will charge much heftier fees for the information although you will then not have to spend the time looking for these documents yourself. Time is money and this route may be more valuable to you than the monetary savings of doing it yourself.
